Boys Take 2nd @ Indoor NLCC

Friday, March 15 2019 - NLCC Indoor Championships (Co-Ed)


On Thursday, March 7th the boys track and field team competed at the indoor NLCC championships.  The Sequoits gave it their best but fell 9 points short of knocking off the defending champs of Grant.  The team received a big boost from the field events.  Giving the team a quick 18 points were Chase Becker and Matt Becker.  The duo placed 1st and 2nd, throwing 51'0 and 50'9" respectively.  The long jump produced the 2nd conference champ for the Sequoits, as senior Zach Grindley brought home gold jumping 21'4".  Teammate Athan Kaliakmanis picked up a need point as the sophomore placed 6th with a leap of 19'5.75".  Grindley came back in the high jump and earned another all conference by tying for 2nd with fellow Sequoit Drew Smith.  The triple jump proved to be another strong event for the team as TreShawn Watson placed 2nd and junior Chris Penn picked up 2 points by placing 5th.  Senior Nico Fier and junior Tyler Oslage tied for 3rd and the duo both cleared 11'6".  On the track, the Sequoits were led by junior Charlie Smith in the distances.  Smith won the 3200, anchored the 3rd place 4x400 relay, and won the 1600 where he set a new NLCC indoor record.  The 4x800 relay of Mike Volkmar, Eric Hart, Josh Linck, and Sebastian Scofield placed 4th, the 4x200 relay of Dino Kaliakmanis, Ryan Shaputis, Athan Kaliakmanis, and TreShawn Watson placed 3rd, while the 4x400 of Shaputis, Scofield, Hart, and Smith also placed 3rd with seasons best.  In the hurdles, Watson and A. Kaliakmanis each picked up their 3rd all conference medal as they placed 2nd and 6th respectively.  Senior Mikey Volkmar came back after a solid lead off leg in the 4x800 to place 4th, senior Sebby Scofield snuck in for a 6th place all conference medal in the 800 meters.  Ryan Shaputis earned his 2nd all conference award by placing 5th in the 400 meter dash.  Dino Kaliakmanis saved his best race for last as he ran 23.33 to place 3rd in the 200 meter dash.
